In light of our Lord’s Supper service tonight (6:30 PM), below is a modern hymn by D.A. Carson on how shocking it is that we would forget the Savior and need to remember him as we do in the communion meal. Let’s come together tonight in song, scripture, and symbol for the much-needed remembrance of Christ.<\/p>\n
A shocking thing, this, that we should forget
\nThe Savior who gave up his life \u00e2\u20ac\u201c
\nTo turn from the cross, indifferent, and let
\nOur minds veer toward self-love and strife.
\nThe table, this rite, is habit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and yet
\nChrist’s words pierce our shame like a knife:<\/p>\nWhile breaking the bread, the Lord Jesus said,
\n“Do this in remembrance of me.”<\/p>\nEnamored with power, surrounded with praise,
\nWe set out our ecclesial plans.
\nEfficiency hums, and we spend our days
\nDefending, promoting our stands.
\nTechniques multiply, our structures amaze \u00e2\u20ac\u201c
\nThe gospel slips out of our hands.<\/p>\nWhile breaking the bread, the Lord Jesus said,
\n“Do this in remembrance of me.
\nO remember, remember the cross.
\nFrom my side issued water and blood,
\nThis was no accident,
\nI bore the wrath of my God.”<\/p>\n“Remember my bed, the dank cattle shed,
\nThough glory was all my domain.
\nRemember the years of service and tears
\nThat climaxed in lashings of pain.
\nBy God’s own decree, your guilt fell on me,
\nAnd all of my loss is your gain.”<\/p>\nWhile breaking the bread, the Lord Jesus said,
\n“Do this in remembrance of me.”<\/p>\n“Remember my tears, Gethsemene’s fears;
\nRecall that my followers fled,
\nThat I was betrayed, disowned and arraigned \u00e2\u20ac\u201c
\nThe Prince of Life crucified, dead.
\nRemember your shame, your sin and your blame;
\nRemember the blood that I shed.”<\/p>\nWhile lifting the cup, the Savior spoke up,
\n“Do this in remembrance of me.”<\/p>\nSo now when we eat this feast simply spread
\nI blush I forget to recall.
\nFor this quiet rite means once more I have fed
\nOn bread that gave life once for all;
\nMemorial feast\u00e2\u20ac\u201djust wine, broken bread\u00e2\u20ac\u201d
