Carson and Fred G. Zaspel spoke on our theme, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/messages\/By_Series\/Clarus_2012\/\">The Cross-Shaped Christian Life<\/a>.&#8221; In his recent post\u00c2\u00a0over at The Gospel Coalition Blog, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/2012\/04\/23\/carson-and-zaspel-rest-in-the-gospel-or-strive-unto-holiness\/\">Rest in the Gospel or Strive Unto Holiness?<\/a>&#8220;,\u00c2\u00a0Ryan followed up on an issue that came up during the Clarus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/messages\/Date\/MAR_10_2012_e.php\">panel discussion<\/a>: the nature of\u00c2\u00a0effort in the Christian life:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/t4g.org\/\">Together for the Gospel<\/a> conference, Kevin DeYoung\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=wz33FckELKw\">delivered an excellent message<\/a>, &#8220;Spirit-Powered, Gospel-Driven, Faith-Fueled Effort.&#8221; My prolific friend and fellow Council member for The Gospel Coalition also has a book coming out on the subject,\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Hole-Our-Holiness-Godliness\/dp\/1433533340\/?tag=thegospcoal-20\"><em>The Hole in Our Holiness: Filling the Gap between Gospel Passion and the Pursuit of Godliness<\/em><\/a>. Anyone attuned to the reformed evangelical blogosphere will know that Kevin&#8217;s sermon and book spring in part from lively in-house discussions over the last year about the nature of sanctification: its relationship to justification, the gospel, effort, and so on. (If that&#8217;s news to you,\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/justintaylor\/2011\/08\/18\/gospel-grace-and-effort-roundup\/\">start here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Those who have been tracking that ongoing discussion might be interested to know that many of these sanctification-related issues were recently addressed by D. A. Carson and Fred G. Zaspel at\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/2012\/03\/15\/clarus-12-recap-and-resources-on-the-cross-shaped-christian-life\/\">Clarus &#8217;12<\/a>, a TGC regional conference.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/2012\/04\/23\/carson-and-zaspel-rest-in-the-gospel-or-strive-unto-holiness\/\">Ryan&#8217;s post<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0continued with a partial transcript of his discussion with Carson and Zaspel on this particular issue. His post concluded with a list of the questions that guided the 83 minute conversation, largely focused on the doctrine of sanctification:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you understand Paul&#8217;s struggle with sin in\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Romans%207.17-25\" data-reference=\"Romans 7.17-25\" data-version=\"esv\">Romans 7:17-25<\/a>? (Fred and Don have differing views of Rom. 7&#8212;and neither is the most popular view!)<\/li>\n<li>What is the relationship between justification and sanctification? Are they tied or separate?<\/li>\n<li>Can we see our own growth? Or is growth only the further, deeper acknowledgment of our need for the gospel?<\/li>\n<li>If we have only one nature, why do we still sin?<\/li>\n<li>What is &#8220;perfectionism&#8221;? And what is the &#8220;higher life movement&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>Warfield wrote a work called Miserable Sinner Christianity. What is &#8220;miserable sinner Christianity&#8221;?
