{"id":3890,"date":"2012-12-04T09:56:25","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T15:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/?p=3890"},"modified":"2012-12-04T11:18:20","modified_gmt":"2012-12-04T17:18:20","slug":"the-story-of-dscs-work-among-the-achi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/the-story-of-dscs-work-among-the-achi\/","title":{"rendered":"The Story of DSC&#8217;s Work Among The Achi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=28858\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28858\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guat Med-Dental-March 2010 1044\" src=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/files\/2012\/11\/Guat-Med-Dental-March-2010-1044-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last week the <a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/\">TGC Blog<\/a> published a nice piece about DSC&#8217;s missions strategy, focusing on what DSC&#8217;s purpose to do less better has meant for our work among the Achi in Guatemala.\u00c2\u00a0Here&#8217;s a section from the beginning of the article,\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/2012\/11\/28\/why-less-is-more-in-missions\/\">Why Less is More in Missions<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Reactive and sporadic.&#8221; That&#8217;s how many members of\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/\">Desert Springs Church<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in Albuquerque, New Mexico, would describe their mission efforts prior to 2004. Plenty of good intention, but little deliberate strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you can relate.<\/p>\n<p>Around 2004, however, a group of lay and staff leaders at Desert Springs sought &#8220;church missions coaching&#8221; with\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.1615.org\/\">Sixteen: Fifteen<\/a>, an organization that encourages, equips, and mobilizes congregations in their call to reach the nations. The church ultimately\u00c2\u00a0decided to adopt a &#8220;least reached&#8221; people group: the Rabinal Achi. These peaceful agricultural people dwell in the mountains of Guatemala, where they&#8217;ve managed to maintain their Mayan identity\u00c2\u00a0for centuries.<\/p>\n<p>For almost three decades, encompassing much of the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), Rodrigo and Carol Barrera, a couple serving with\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wycliffe.org\/\">Wycliffe Bible Translators<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0had been laboring to translate the New Testament into the Achi&#8217;s native tongue. But as of 2004, the project was still incomplete.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/tgc\/2012\/11\/28\/why-less-is-more-in-missions\/\">Click here<\/a> to read the story of how DSC partnered with the Barreras to complete this translation of the New Testament for the Achi of\u00c2\u00a0Guatemala, and how DSC&#8217;s focused strategy helped make this possible.
