Ryan showed these across a few slides, but we thought we&#8217;d compile these fascinating contrasts for you here on the blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contrasting events, Same Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On two separate days there are a series of contrasting events that happen alongside one another. There are clear queues in the text, but it can be hard to pick up at first. Ryan pointed them out to us on two slides.<\/p>\n<p>Day 1:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saul <strong>hears<\/strong> of Philistines assembling for battle against the Israelites (1 Samuel 28:4-5)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>discovers<\/strong> the terror of Ziklag city raided, burned, and families taken (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:1-6)<\/li>\n<li>Saul <strong>inquires<\/strong> of the Lord in vain just silence (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a028:5-6)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>inquires<\/strong> of the Lord and hears and is led out with God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s blessing (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:7-8)<\/li>\n<li>Saul <strong>sets out<\/strong> to Endor for a medium (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a028:7)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>sets<\/strong> out to pursue Amalekites (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Day 2:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saul <strong>faces Philistines<\/strong> and is slain (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:1-5)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>finds Amalekites<\/strong> and decimates them (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:16-20)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Contrast Increases toward the Close of the Book<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the book nears its close, the contrasts between David and Saul get more and more pronounced.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>David <strong>inquired<\/strong> of the Lord and was led (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:8)<\/li>\n<li>Saul <strong>inquired<\/strong>, but got only silence, then judgment (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a028:6-7)<\/li>\n<li>With <strong>no strength<\/strong> David strengthened himself in God (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:4, 6)<\/li>\n<li>With <strong>no strength<\/strong> Saul was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153strengthened\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by a witch (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a028:20, 22)<\/li>\n<li>David was divinely rescued by\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Philistines<\/strong> (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a0 29)<\/li>\n<li>Saul was divinely judged by\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Philistines<\/strong> (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:1)<\/li>\n<li>David faced God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <strong>enemies<\/strong> with confidence (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:9, 10)<\/li>\n<li>Saul faced God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <strong>enemies<\/strong> with fear (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a028:5, 19-20)<\/li>\n<li>Facing<strong> death<\/strong>, David sought the Lord for strength (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:6)<\/li>\n<li>Facing <strong>death<\/strong>, Saul asked his servant to expedite it (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:5)<\/li>\n<li>David pursued and <strong>struck down<\/strong> the enemy (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:17)<\/li>\n<li>Saul fled, hid, and was <strong>struck down<\/strong> by the enemy (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:1-3)<\/li>\n<li>With David, none of his 400 men <strong>died<\/strong> (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a0 30)<\/li>\n<li>With Saul, everyone around him <strong>died<\/strong> (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:6)<\/li>\n<li>Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s enemies <strong>fled<\/strong> before David and his people\u00c2\u00a0(1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:17)<\/li>\n<li>Israelites <strong>fled<\/strong> after Saul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s death (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:7)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>plundered<\/strong> the enemies (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:20)<\/li>\n<li>The Philistines <strong>plundered<\/strong> Israel (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:7b-10)<\/li>\n<li>David sent out <strong>good news<\/strong> of victory to his people (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:26)<\/li>\n<li>The Philistines sent out \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<strong>good news<\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of Saul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s death (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:9)<\/li>\n<li>David <strong>led Israel<\/strong> in peace, care, and blessing (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a030:24-26)<\/li>\n<li>Saul <strong>led Israel<\/strong> into utter chaos, shame, and exile (1 Samuel\u00c2\u00a031:7-10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Sunday&#8217;s sermon, &#8220;Thus Saul Died,&#8221;
