He is a member of the Albuquerque Chapter of The Gospel Coalition.\u00c2\u00a0This post is a summary of David Helm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s message from Saturday afternoon at <a href=\"http:\/\/clarusabq.com\/\">Clarus<\/a>, March 21, &#8220;Preaching: God&#8217;s Speech,&#8221; from Acts 17:16-34.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> <em>Help someone out who would say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Where do I go to see how the Bible is put together?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don Carson<\/span>:\u00c2\u00a0 The most important thing is to read the Bible. There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a danger in reading the resources so much that you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t read the Bible itself.\u00c2\u00a0 I often worry about future-pastors who go out and haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t actually read the text but have only listened to secondary literature. However, there are\u00c2\u00a0 increasing numbers of books that help to see how to put the Bible together, and if you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know where to start ask your pastor. A few examples would be\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/God-Who-There-Finding-Place\/dp\/0801013720\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1426942622&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=the+god+who+is+there\">The God Who Was There<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gods-Big-Picture-Tracing-Storyline\/dp\/0830853642\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1426942707&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=vaughan+roberts\">God&#8217;s Big Picture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong><em>Alistair, in your sermon, you said that we come to church to hear the voice of God. Where does the Bible claim that the preaching of the Word of God is the Word of God?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Alistair Begg<\/span>: Deuteronomy 4 is a good starting point where Moses explains that God has assembled the people to listen to his voice. \u00c2\u00a0And where now is the Word of God?\u00c2\u00a0 In the New Testament the Word of God was preached and explained and was then inscripturated.\u00c2\u00a0 If we want to know what God has said, we look to what was breathed out in Scripture.\u00c2\u00a0 There is also this mysterious work of the Spirit where the skeptic can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t fully explain the effectiveness of the Word in terms of the skill or effectiveness of the preacher. \u00c2\u00a0The skeptic has always tried to understand the book that he is reading, but in the Bible he often finds that the Book understands him. The best argument for the authenticity of the Bible is the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong><em>This weekend is about expository preaching.\u00c2\u00a0 David, you<\/em><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve written a book on it.\u00c2\u00a0 Could you give us a definition of what expository preaching is?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">David Helm<\/span>: Expository preaching is empowered preaching where the shape and emphasis of the sermon is rightly submitted to the shape and emphasis of the text.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong><em>Doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t that presuppose a singular text?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">David Helm<\/span>: Tomorrow I will try to answer that, but generally speaking that answer is yes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Note:\u00c2\u00a0Ethan Hester is the Interim Senior Pastor at Grace Bible Church, Las Cruces, NM.
