Prayer for Our Beloved Brother – Dr. Jacobo Pineda

Dr. Jacobo and Janette PinedaPlease pray for Dr. Jacobo Pineda and his wife Janette. While many in the Desert Springs congregation have been to Guatemala and gotten to know Dr. Jacobo and his wife, Janette, many others have not and here is a little background:
“Dr. Jacobo is a general practice physician in Guatemala City who has developed a “heart” for the Rabinal Achi. He began visits to the San Miguel Chicaj area providing medical care and presenting the CHE (Community Health Evangelism) program long before Desert Springs Church began its outreach to the Achi in 2004. He has dedicated about a week each month with his outreach and supporting other visiting groups such as Desert Springs. Partnering with him in his outreach became a natural evolution in Desert Springs efforts to also reach out and assist the Achi. He has continued his medical and CHE activities as well as overseeing the Microfinance program from DSC, participating in the DSC Pastoral Training Conferences, and coordinating our annual medical and dental mission trips. Dr. Jacobo and Janette were in the U.S. October 2017 and were at DSC during Missions Emphasis Week that Fall.

“A few weeks after returning to Guatemala City, he noted some flank pain and an ultrasound revealed a mass in one of his kidneys. At surgery this turned out to be a renal cell cancer and the kidney was removed. At the time there was no evidence of spread to lymphatics or other organs and he elected to pursue a course of naturopathic treatment. He was scheduled for follow-up blood studies and scans this coming September 2018 to check for any progression. However, in late July, he noted a couple of lumps in his neck which biopsies revealed metastatic cancer from the kidney. The cancer specialist recommended chemotherapy now instead of surgery for the lumps but as of Sunday morning, August 5th, his kidney specialist did not believe that his one remaining kidney would survive the chemotherapy. Obviously, this puts Dr. Jacobo in a very ominous position with limited treatment options. He is having further blood work and scans but he and Janette are facing serious decisions these next few weeks.

“Dr. Jacobo and Janette are strong Christians and their ultimate home is in Heaven, but his absence would be devastating to his wife and family, our own DSC family, and the progression of the CHE Program with the Rabinal Achi as well as adversely impacting DSC’s ability to have medical missions to Guatemala. We are very limited in how we can support this amazing Christian couple. We ask the whole DSC family to fervently lift them up in prayer. Pray for wisdom and discernment in the medical decisions they will be making and also pray for a miraculous healing that would give the ultimate glory to God realizing that God is in control and His will be done.”

Medical Missions Team’s Final Days in Guatemala

2018 | by Josiah | Category: Field Updates,Global,Prayer,Rabinal Achi,Trips

The 2018 Guatemala Medical Mission trip has come to an end.  Not before the team spent a couple more long, hard-working days since the last update.  Thursday, May 30th, the team had made the short, steep drive to Chicholom, the views were stunning. They did the last clinic setup for this trip since the facility holding all the supplies could be locked.

Sophia, a teenager who was here last year, once again had a wonderful time playing with the children. Some of the children even remembered her name.

On Friday, the team’s last clinic was a very busy half day. They had to say good-bye to their Achi friends that they served with before parting ways.  Through slow traffic the DSC team headed to Antigua where they spent the following day debriefing, resting, and being tourists.

Thank you so much for your prayers. They have had safe travel and great success working even in difficult conditions. After a long day of travel, the team arrived back in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. Please pray for them as they try to catch up on rest and sleep after long hard days and most of them have responsibilities to get back to tomorrow. Pray for the people that were served that they felt God’s love. For those who don’t know the Lord that they come to a saving faith. For those who saw the team for medical reasons that they were of assistance to them.

Desert Springs Church’s 12 person medical mission team arrived safely in Guatemala City on Friday, May 25. They traveled with at least 30 bags carrying medical supplies for the following 10 days. On Saturday, they traveled to San Miguel.

Josiah and Jacque had a Guatemalan Jehovah Witness sit between them on the flight to Guatemala City. This gentleman comes from an area near Tactic, one of the places the team will be going to. He remembered missionaries coming to his community to teach the children how to brush their teeth. He then thanked the two for what we are doing. Please pray for this gentleman, Dieter, as they were able to share from the Bible how Jesus is God. He was open to those verses. He will be on the same return flight as the team to the States. Perhaps there will be an opportunity to continue to share with him.

Please pray for safe travels and health as the team faces a full schedule in the days to come going to different villages around the area of San Miguel. Pray for the entire team, both those from the States and those from Guatemala as they serve the Rabinal Achi.
