Updates from the Rez – Chuck and Cindy Harper’s Ministry Update

Chuck and Cindy Harper, our missionaries in residence to Native America write:

We wanted to give you a brief praise report for the “Breathe” Youth Leader Retreat we hosted this past weekend (April 20-21).  Christ for Native Youth serves many youth leaders who are making a difference among some incredible young people from many of the Indian Reservations in America.

Breathe 2013-01

These youth leaders work with some of the most “at risk” youth in North America.   Suicide, substance abuse, incest, sexual abuse, and gender identity issues are just the beginning of the list. Yet, these youth workers volunteer their time, spend their own money to run programs, and work countless hours helping students in numerous ways.

Breathe 2013-02

This past weekend 45 youth leaders were with us!   DSC was a special part of making it happen.  Thank you for how you give generously to missions in our church!

“Vincent” sat next to us at lunch and with tears streaming down his 24 year old face, he spoke of his recent conversion out of a gang in southern Arizona. He was truly repentant when he quietly said he was so sorry for “the horrible things” he had done to people. He had lost everything, including the right to be part of his 3-year-old daughter’s life. He was almost killed twice; once by gunshot, another by a knife wound near his heart.

His mentor, part of our work for 21 years, shared with us that “Vince” never tells anyone those things. We felt honored that he would share with us. It really is a blessing when someone lets you in.

Vince has physical scars that remind him that his chances of making it to age 30 are slim, but he also has a Christian man in his village that disciples him and a lot of people from “Breathe” praying for him. He hopes to go to Indian Bible College in Flagstaff next fall.

God sent a “lifeline” to Vince. Many young Native men and women don’t have that opportunity because they don’t have a Christian in their village that cares enough to feed them, love them and model the grace and compassion of Jesus.

I thought it was incredibly appropriate that our friend Terry shared a message at “Breathe”, from the book of Daniel, chapter 10:12, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.”

We trust God for that.

Hilltop Christian School, since 1964, has also been a special part of WIM, and blessed hundreds of Navajo children, in the Window Rock, AZ area.

The upcoming school year, however, is without enough staff, or infrastructure, hence   the leadership of the mission decided to put the school on PAUSE for the 2013-2014 school year. We will plan to keep the Preschool open, and possibly Kindergarten.

This change will be a huge loss to the children and parents of the school, and most of our current teachers will be without a job.   We do anticipate a significant re-start in the fall of 2014.

Some of our prayer requests and praises:

  • Eric Tiger has accepted our invitation to come as our next school principal  (He will begin the process of raising support- and will move to Window Rock from Arkansas)
  • Teachers sent by God to serve Native American families
  • Wisdom for us to help parents find alternatives for their children, in what may be one of the most turbulent public school systems on the Navajo Reservation today
  • Funds and workers to upgrade our facilities
  • After school programs/extra-curricular activities/sports
  • Greater parent and community participation
  • Expansion of our financial base
  • Staff needs:  a bookkeeper, administrative assistant, and office help
  • Office space in Albuquerque  Thanks so much for your prayers…
