Christmas Store 2013 in Their Own Words – DSC Store

2014 | by Clint | Category: Christmas Store

DSC Member Tara S. shares this about here experiences at the Christmas store on December 14, 2013.

“I volunteered at the Christmas Store by greeting guests and facilitating registration.  Three sisters captured my attention as they crowded around the small registration table with their children.  They were smiling.  They seemed happy.  We laughed.  We chatted some and eventually they went to the store and received their toys.  Later, as the crowd thinned, I noticed two of the sisters still in the lobby.  They called me over and began to tell me their story.

An escape from domestic violence.  A family member entrapped in prostitution.  An eviction.  A father in prison.  A mother with chronic illness.  Suddenly, where there had been sweet smiling faces, there were now tears, uncertainly and pain.  We talked about solutions to immediate needs and I prayed for them.  I noticed the tattered kid’s craft on the table in front of us depicting Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in a manger and I said, “Let me tell you about this baby.”  I told them about our Savior, Jesus, born as a human baby into poverty, into uncertainty, into a violent, hurting humanity to purchase our salvation.

Honestly, it felt ill-timed and awkward as words seemed to fall on hard, stony ground.  Such desperate hearts in need of saving truth and yet the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of sin seem to cloud the truth. Still, I pray that those brief words spoken at the Christmas Store will shine light into darkness and the Holy Spirit will even now stir up hearts to believe. ”  – Tara
