All Settled In!

2016 | by Clint | Category: Field Updates,Global,Missionary Care,Rabinal Achi

Beth Meier, of DSC, recently helped the Barreras travel to and settle back into life in San Miguel after their stay in Wyoming for a couple of years. Here is an update from her travel with them.

A major goal of going on this trip was to be of assistance to Carol and Rodrigo Barrera when they traveled to San Miguel Chicaj. We met in Denver, Colorado. I was able to help Carol with her carry-on luggage, and tried to help with all the other little things you encounter when traveling. The first night was spent in Guatemala City. We then headed to San Miguel. God blessed us with safe travels.

Here are some key points of my trip there:

• I was thrilled when freshly made tortillas and black beans arrived from Maria to the Barrera home, when we first arrived. That is one of my favorite dishes there!
• The Barreras had up to 16 visitors a day for the first few days. It started in the morning and continued into the evening. I find it lovely and interesting witnessing the impact they have in that community. The love people have for them, and the love they have for the people there. Not to mention the ministries Carol and Rodrigo have in translation, counseling, encouragement, etc. They were given some welcome back gifts. One was a live chicken, which ended up being the protein part of a soup we had a few days later. It was so good.Guatemala 2-Beth

• Many members of the Ixcopal family helped with getting the house up and running for Carol and Rodrigo. Lots of yard work and maintenance was done.
• YWAM sent out a short-term missions team shortly after our arrival. We were able to join them in prayer right before they left.Guatemala 1-Beth
• Carol, Rodrigo, and I had the honor of being invited to a special dinner celebrating the wedding anniversary of David, Maria, David’s brother and his wife.
• I reconnected with a number of my wonderful friends there including Irma and her family, Kathi, Eder, Aura, and Hector. I also made new friends much to my delight.Guatemala 7-Beth
• Rodrigo coordinated a special trip to Museo del Trapiche, a sugar mill in San Jeronimo, for me. Belen was my escort. It was fun in that she doesn’t speak English, and I don’t speak Spanish. Prior to going to Guatemala I got an English Spanish app that works offline. It was a huge assistance. We had many laughs on that excursion.

• Aura and I spent some time in Salama. She treated me to coffee and a piece of pie. It was a wonderful outing.
• One day when Carol wasn’t feeling well, I covered for her in regards to visitors. Fortunately, the main visitor she had did speak English.
• Rodrigo saw the need for individuals desiring additional assistance on their English. All of us had a meeting. We are now doing an English class long distance.
• Carol and I had a wonderful visit where they are doing the OT translation.
• I have to mention that it was extremely hot with high humidity. A combination I do not react well to. The Lord was merciful and saw me through it. I was encouraged by the fact even the locals found it to be terrible. It wasn’t just me. I was so grateful for the fan they put in my room.

Prayer requests:

• The YWAM team that is now in Panama.
• Ofelia, a dear friend of many at Desert Springs, is in her third trimester of pregnancy and she has been put on bed rest. She is allowed up only for necessities. Please pray for the baby, for the time to pass quickly for Ofelia, and a safe delivery. She is scheduled for a C-section in the middle of June.
• For Carol and Rodrigo. Carol shared with me all that is happening while they are there. It is nonstop for them. All of it is good. Pray for continued health, strength, and wisdom for them.Guatemala 4-Beth
• For the English class I am trying to do. In addition to trying to do it in a way that is really beneficial to the people who want to learn, that I may be able to share God’s love and His word.
• Pray for the people there. There is a lot of immorality there even within the church. May the people go to scripture diligently and apply it to their lives. Pray for the unbelievers that they may come to God.

There is much more I could share, but I will leave it at that. I was stunned when I looked at my passport and realized that it had been over four years since my last trip there. That is way too long! I look forward to my next trip to Achi land.
