LoveINC Extends Tenderlove

2015 | by Clint | Category: Giving Opportunity,Local,Love INC

LoveINCLogoLoveINC1The people at TenderLove Community Center, one of the ministries that Love INC helps to support, have a real heart for the homeless. That’s because their Executive Director Debbie Johnson was on the streets herself for several months when she first came to the US from Nigeria. In 2011 she moved to Albuquerque with the goal of providing valuable job training for homeless and low-income women.

In 2013 TenderLove Community Center opened its doors to 23 women and began teaching them how to sew, Debbie said. The program is unique – not only teaching the students a trade, but at the same time allowing them to make their own money from any alterations contracts they work on. And, their own creations are sold at their location on 4th Street in their thrift store, during open-house sales held on Friday’s, and at their annual fashion show.

Eight women graduated from the first 12-month program last October and a new class was started soon after. Debbie said the current class will graduate in September or October of this year. The goal is to help the graduates obtain employment within three months of graduation.

Love INC has been able to support TenderLove with donations of fabric and sewing machines it has received. Through the Clearinghouse process Love INC has also been able to refer applicants to the program. Debbie said she is blessed to have many partners like Love INC to help support the program. “Love INC is just so adorable!” she said.

As with most non-profits, TenderLove is always looking for ways to support its program. They have begun offering a Saturday sewing class to anyone interested for $30. And of course, they always have a need for fabrics, thread and, yes, sewing machines.
