Below is a basic outline for the sermon.<\/p>\n<p>THE CHAPTER IN EIGHT SCENES:<\/p>\n<p>Scene 1: The twelve sent out on mission (1-11)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 2: Five thousand fed (12-17)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 3:\u00c2\u00a0 Peter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s confession (18-21); Prediction of Jesus&#8217; death (22); Discipleship explained (23-27)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 4: The transfiguration (28-36)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 5: A demon possessed boy healed (37-45)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 6: Who is the greatest? (46-48)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 7: Who is for us and who is against us? An outsider who heals in Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0name? (49-50); Inhospitable Samaritans? (52-56)<\/p>\n<p>Scene 8: Discipleship explained again (57-62)<\/p>\n<p>CONNECTING DOTS BETWEEN THE STORIES<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to get more clear about who Jesus is<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the commissioner of the disciples (1-6)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the Elijah-like Prophet (8, 19, 30)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a miraculous provider (12-17)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the Christ (20-21)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the friend of Elijah and Moses (30-31)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the unique glory of God incarnate (32, 34-35)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s uniquely sovereign over demons \u00e2\u20ac\u201c unlike the disciples (40-43)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He came to save, not destroy (56)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on a mission \u00e2\u20ac\u201c He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153determined to go to Jerusalem\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0(51)<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to tell the disciples of his impending death<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Herod is growing concerned (7-9) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this is Luke tipping his hand about what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s to come<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Jesus explicitly says that he will suffer and die and be raised (22, 44)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 His disciples will have to follow him to take up their cross (23)\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 He was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153determined to go to Jerusalem\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (51)\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 In light of v 51, the significance of v 31 becomes clearer (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153they were speaking of <em>His departure which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d)<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to start to pass the mission on to the disciples<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples go out as an extension of Jesus and his ministry (1-2, 6)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples are to join Jesus in seeking salvation of the lost (54-56)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples are not to be rivals (49-50)<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to fully warn of the sacrifice and single-focus of the mission<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples go out expecting their provision to come from God (3)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples go out anticipating rejection and suffering (5, 23-27)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples are to be child-like, not jockeying for greatness (46-48)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Disciples go out in sacrifice and with a singular focus (57-62)<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time for the disciples to start to really get all of this<\/p>\n<p><em>There are a couple examples of them getting it in this chapter:<br \/>\n<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 When they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sent out with nothing and return with a good report \u00c2\u00a0(1-11)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Peter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s confession (20)<\/p>\n<p><em>There are more examples of the disciples not getting it (being knuckleheads):<br \/>\n<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Peter doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t understand the utter uniqueness of Jesus in God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plan (32-35)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Jesus is frustrated with the disciples\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 failure to cast out a demon (40-41)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 They did not understand what he said about his death (44-45; cf 22)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 They debate among themselves about which of them is the greatest (46)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 They wonder if they should oppose an outsider who works in Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0name (49)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 They wonder if they should call down destruction on inhospitable Samaritans (53-54)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday&#8217;s sermon looked at Luke 9.
