{"id":427,"date":"2009-10-20T14:35:14","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T20:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/?p=427"},"modified":"2009-10-21T14:24:46","modified_gmt":"2009-10-21T20:24:46","slug":"these-books-are-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/2009\/10\/these-books-are-money\/","title":{"rendered":"These Books Are Money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-431 alignright\" title=\"these_books_are_money\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/books_money.gif\" alt=\"these_books_are_money\" width=\"166\" height=\"216\" align=\"right\" \/>As a follow-up to Ryan&#8217;s <a title=\"What is your treasure?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/messages\/Date\/OCT_04_2009.php\" target=\"_blank\">sermon on money<\/a>, here are four great books about money and giving.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a title=\"The Treasure Principle, Randy Alcorn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1590525086\/desesprichur-20\" target=\"_blank\">The Treasure Principle<\/a><\/em>, by Randy Alcorn, is a short book that we have available for free at the resource center.\u00c2\u00a0 This book is about seeking joy through giving; it is a challenging, but exciting, devotional-type book.\u00c2\u00a0 If you read only one book from this list, this is the one I would recommend.<\/li>\n<li>Another short and easy read is <em><a title=\"In God We Trust, Michael Haykin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heritagebooks.org\/products\/In-God-We-Trust:-What-is-God-Saying-in-the-Midst-of-the-Financial-Crisis%3F.html\" target=\"_blank\">In God We Trust<\/a><\/em>, by Michael Haykin, also available at the resource center.\u00c2\u00a0 This book was written as an evaluation of the current financial crisis, specifically answering the questions, &#8220;What is God trying to tell us in the midst of this crisis?&#8221; and &#8220;How should we respond in a financial crisis?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Slightly longer is Randy Alcorn&#8217;s, <em><a title=\"Money, Possessions, and Eternity, by Randy Alcorn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0842353607\/desesprichur-20\" target=\"_blank\">Money, Possessions, and Eternity<\/a><\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 This book provides a more comprehensive view of money and possessions than either of the previous books, and calls Christians to rethink their perspectives in a biblical light.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a great reference book to have around when you&#8217;re wondering what the bible teaches about anything from tithing and helping the poor to gambling, debt, and investing.<\/li>\n<li>One further resource, which Ryan mentioned during the sermon, is Juliet Schor&#8217;s, <em><a title=\"The Overspent American\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0060977582\/desesprichur-20\" target=\"_blank\">The Overspent American<\/a><\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Although this isn&#8217;t a Christian book, it still provides a helpful evaluation of consumerism and the mechanics of desire in our marketing-driven culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a follow-up to Ryan&#8217;s sermon on money, here are four great books about money and giving.
