{"id":458,"date":"2009-11-04T16:01:09","date_gmt":"2009-11-04T22:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/?p=458"},"modified":"2009-11-04T16:01:09","modified_gmt":"2009-11-04T22:01:09","slug":"characteristics-and-interpretation-of-parables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.desertspringschurch.org\/blog\/2009\/11\/characteristics-and-interpretation-of-parables\/","title":{"rendered":"Characteristics and Interpretation of Parables"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since Ryan has been preaching through some parables recently, here are two lists that offer helpful guidelines for understanding Jesus&#8217; parables.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of these lists are from Klyne Snodgrass&#8217; <em><a title=\"Stories with Intent, Snodgrass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0802842410\/desesprichur-20\" target=\"_blank\">Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus<\/a>. <\/em>These are just the headlines of each point, so if you want to read more you can either <a title=\"Stories with Intent, Snodgrass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0802842410\/desesprichur-20\" target=\"_blank\">purchase<\/a> the book or read some of it online <a title=\"Stories with Intent, Snodgrass\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=kFyt0VhErywC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=intitle:stories+intitle:with+intitle:intent+inauthor:snodgrass&amp;lr=&amp;as_drrb_is=q&amp;as_minm_is=0&amp;as_miny_is=&amp;as_maxm_is=0&amp;as_maxy_is=&amp;as_brr=0&amp;ei=2efxSvDeE5WQlQS84LXKDQ#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Characteristics of Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Parables (pp. 17-21)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 parables are first of all brief<\/em>, even terse.<\/li>\n<li><em>Parables are marked by simplicity and symmetry<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 parables focus mostly on humans<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>The parables are fictional descriptions taken from everyday life<\/em>, but they do not necessarily portray everyday events.<\/li>\n<li><em>Parables are engaging<\/em>; they were told to create interest\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/li>\n<li>Since they frequently seek to reorient thought and behavior, in keeping with Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 teaching elsewhere <em>parables often contain elements of reversal<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>With their intent to bring about response and elements like reversal, <em>the crucial matter of parables is usually at the end, <\/em>which functions something like the punch line of a joke.<\/li>\n<li><em>Parables are told into a context<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 parables are theocentric<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Parables frequently allude to OT texts<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Most parables appear in larger collections of parables<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How Should Parables Be Interpreted? (pp. 24-30)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Analyze each parable thoroughly<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Listen to the parable without presupposition as to its form or meaning<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Remember that Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 parables were oral instruments in a largely oral culture<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>If we are after the intent of Jesus, we must seek to hear a parable as Jesus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Palestinian hearers would have heard it<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Note how each parable and its redactional shaping fit with the purpose and plan of each Evangelist<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Determine specifically the function of the story in the teaching of Jesus<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Interpret what is given, not what is omitted.\u00c2\u00a0 Any attempt to interpret a parable based on what is not there is almost certainly wrong<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em> Do not impose real time on parable time<\/em>.
