Community Health Evangelism Program in Guatemala

2016 | by Clint | Category: Field Updates,Global,Rabinal Achi,Training

Let’s rejoice in what the Lord is doing in the lives of our Achi brothers and sisters, and their community. Here is what Dany Xolop and Dr. Jacobo are working on through the CHE (Community Health Evangelism) Program:

Guatemala, March 2016
Dear friends in Christ:

It´s a pleasure to inform the work made in the Achí area; and what is happening with the local committee of Chicholom.

On March we had a meeting with the CHE committee, and we visit the children of the dental screening program.

During our visit of the Dental screening program, the mothers of the children who are in the program received training on oral health, which has led us to see gradually positive changes.

We also had training with the CHE committee, the subjects that were given during this training were; How to plan by steps, The role of the committee (Physical topics), Discipleship and Worldview (Spiritual topics). It was a blessing to share these topics with the committee, it motivate them and we enjoy learning together these topics, based on the Spanish Bible and The New Testament in Achí, which made the learning process easier for the committee by analyze the bible verses.

Moreover we have been working on the self management of the local community, through trainings and by forming the CHE committee, to be successful as result of taking everything that they learned in the trainings through practice. It´s great to see how the CHE committee it’s putting into actions all the theory learned during the trainings, for example; the construction project of the Middle school for the community, using the local resources and materials like: bricks made of clay, soil and sand cooked in a wood oven, using only 10% of resources or materials that are not made in the community like; galvanized iron and cement. To end this project they need to put on the roof of the classrooms with meat roof support and aluminum ceiling.

We want to share our request prayers;

  1. For the CHE committee training, to keep seeing physical and spiritual changes as the result of the training.
  2. For budget to finish the Middle school for the community.
  3. For budget to have three bilingual teachers (Spanish-Achí)

In the love of Jesus Christ, yours sincerely,

Jacobo and Jannette Pineda

Achi Pastors Training 2016 Summary

65 Pastors and leaders gathered for two days of Expositional Preaching training.

“What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

Paul’s command to Timothy to entrust the gospel to faithful men was meant both to guard the truth and to create a movement of solid Bible teachers in his region. Similarly, DSC has been working with a group of leaders in Guatemala for the past 9 years to help train pastors who will preach the gospel and build up the church.

By the grace of God, we have just completed another pastors training conference with our partners in Guatemala. Our topic this week was expositional preaching. We began the conference by emphasizing the importance of teaching based solely on the Bible. This is very important because many of the pastors here are confused about the source of preaching: is it the preacher’s own thoughts or the Bible?

In our attempt to train faithful men to pass on the gospel we also taught them a method for expositional preaching. This method is the same one used by the Charles Simeon Preaching Trust hosted by DSC each fall. Throughout the week we showed the pastors how to use this method by working through three passages from the book of 2 Timothy. Our hope is that by encouraging the pastors to use this method for expositing the Bible we will help set all the churches in this area on the path to faithfully passing on the gospel. Please pray with us that God will accomplish this for his glory.

We are especially thankful to Steven Morales and Oscar Morales, two pastors from Iglesia Reforma in Guatemala City who joined us for this training. They acted as both translators and teachers during this conference. Their church is associated with Coalición por el Evangelio, the Spanish arm of The Gospel Coalition. This is the second time that we have partnered with Iglesia Reforma and it’s difficult to overstate how beneficial they are to this work. These guys are actively practicing expositional preaching, which is rare in a country that has been overrun by the prosperity gospel. Please pray for them as they work to spread sound doctrine all over Guatemala through theological training and church planting.

Thank you, Desert Springs Church, for helping to spread God’s glory broader and deeper in Guatemala!
