Another Reason We Are Focused on Doing Less Better in Global Missions

In this helpful blog post, Pastor John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis describes the remaining, unfinished task of “making disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:18) with some helpful statistics.

Here are some of the numbers he gives from the Joshua Project and the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention:

There are between 6,400 and 7,200 unreached people groups (less than 2% evangelical Christian), depending on how you define a people group ethnically, linguistically, or culturally.  Regardless, if you divide those numbers by the estimated 4.5 million Christian congregations worldwide, we are looking at an average of 600-700 Christian congregations for every people group that remains unreached.

Rather than supporting dozens of missionaries with minimal financial, relational, spiritual, even theological investment from our leadership and congregation, we have chosen, ever since 2004, to be more intentional, more strategic, and more focused.  This has meant shoring up our commitment to Native American peoples of Arizona and New Mexico through our partners Chuck and Cindy Harper, adopting the Rabinal Achi of Central Guatemala, and finally, raising up a church planting team to go to North Africa starting in January 2014.

Please join us as we countdown the months, days, weeks, minutes, and even seconds to our first church planting family headed to North Africa.  You can learn more about the Sunrise North Africa Partnership and how we as a congregation are digging in to send them out here and you can get started giving here.

Dr. Piper wraps up his article with this charge:

“(I)f God would grant the passion and courage and wisdom, the remaining task is neither vague, nor enormous, nor unattainable. Would you join me in obeying Matthew 9:38, “Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest”?  And then be a radical, sacrificial goer, or a radical, sacrificial sender. Jesus has all authority to accomplish this. He promises to be with us to the end of the age as we mobilize for this. What a thrilling prospect! What a cause to live for! What a holy ambition.”
