Clean and Living Water to Achi Land!

2015 | by Clint | Category: Field Updates,Global,Prayer,Rabinal Achi

As part our on going relationship with the Rabinal Achi in Guatemala, DSC has added an important component to our effort to provide clean water to Achi villagers in some of the more remote areas of Baja Verapaz.  As some already know, last month DSC helped provide 100 Sawyer water filters to four outlying villages in the San Miguel area.  These filters were donated by Viera Water Network and distributed as a part of Community Health Evangelism (CHE).

In conjunction, Eder Ixcopal visited several DSC community groups, along with David or Karen Gregory.  After hearing and learning of the impact these relatively inexpensive filters have on households, extended families and their neighbors, many of our church body, and some non-DSCers as well, donated to purchase more.  Our initial hope was that each community group could collectively buy a single filter.  About 12 CGs signed up so we were hoping to raise about $500 to $600 to purchase 10 – 12 filters.  But so far, donations to this initiative total more than $7,000!!  That’s amazing! Praise the Lord!

To put this in perspective, these offerings will bless more than 120 Achi households with water no longer contaminated with bacteria and other microbes, and so will improve the lives of 1200 – 2000 people in the San Miguel Chicaj area. Praise God!We ordered another batch of filters last week and plans are being made to distribute wisely to families as an outreach component of Community Health Evangelism and the pastors conference in San Miguel Chicaj (February 4-7).

Feel free to call David Gregory with any questions about water filters for the Achi, or visit the Sawyer website, Contributions for additional filters can be made by simply writing “Achi Water Filters” on a missions envelop available on Sunday mornings or give to “Guatemala Projects online at and designating it “Achi water filter” in the available memo line on he second page.

Also, please pray for our team of three (Clint, Nathan, and Bart) as they, Lord willing, fly to Guatemala this week for a three day pastoral training time.  2015 marks six years in a row we’ve been sending DSC Pastors to Achi land for these pastoral trainings.  We pray God will use our pastors to bless their pastors, as He is always faithful to bless ours through theirs.

Please pray that the messages will be communicated clearly from God’s word and from principles in God’s word.  The goal of this training is to emphasize the need for and benefits of expositional preaching in the local churches.  In other words, the need for the main message of the sermons to line up with the main message of the Scripture passage being preached.

God has taught us much about this through other pastors both outside and inside DSC, and we pray that it will bless, encourage, and challenge these Achi brothers in Christ as they seek to serve their congregations as God’s spokesman using God’s Word.

We treasure these opportunities to dig into God’s word with our Achi brothers, and we pray God will spread His glory broader and deeper.

May God’s glory spread broader and deeper through clean and Living Water!
