Sola Aqua 2011

2011 | by Trent Hunter | Category: Mission

Jesus wants people to have water. He made it and he made us to need it in order to live. But he came and went to the cross in order that we might live eternally. That’s why he says to us, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks fo the water that I will give h im will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).

Jesus is that water.

As those who have received this water, we can’t but offer it to anyone who will listen. Here’s a video highlighting some of God’s work through DSC among the Achi during a recent water trip to Guatemala:

In support of this important work among the Achi, we fast and pray together for one week each year. We call this effort, Sola Aqua. This year, from July 24-31, we will fast from all drinks besides water, and pray for the Achi to know the One who offers them living water. Then, at the July 27 Lord’s Supper or on Sunday, July 31, we will donate the money we saved toward the next mission trip to Guatemala.

The next mission trip to Guatemala will take place from October 8-16. If you’re interested in going, contact Clint Moore for more information at, clint@desertspringschurch.org.

You can learn more about the significance of Jesus’ offer of living water in Ryan Kelly’s explanation of the name of our church.

A New Look, an Old Message

2010 | by Trent Hunter | Category: Gospel,Mission,Vision

In December’s e-Newsletter, Ryan published an article explaining DSC’s symbol. In case you missed it, we’re republishing it here on the blog. If you don’t receive the e-Newsletter but would like to, sign up using the Communication Card on Sunday’s bulletin or email info@desertspringschurch.org and indicate your interest. DSC’s e-Newsletter is published each month and sent to your email inbox.

DSC's Logo

Around the DSC facilities and in printed materials you’ve seen this symbol which represents something about our church’s name, its message, and its mission.

The word picture of springs in the desert is a rich one in Scripture. Three places in Isaiah (35:6-10; 43:19-21; 44:3-5) tell us that we’re a desperate, thirsty, and restless people because of the fall. But these passages also promise a day when life-giving springs will flow in the desert. Then there will be the quench and satisfaction for which we’ve longed and searched. Well, Jesus makes clear that that longed for day has come. He is that “living water” (see John 4 and John 7). He is both salvation and satisfaction.

That’s briefly why we’re called Desert Springs Church. And that word picture is also symbolized in a new-ish logo which you’ve seen on our bulletins, website, and, more recently, on our signage.

There are few things to notice about this symbol:

  • The downward drop reminds us that Christ came down to us—we could not get to him. We were born not only thirsty, but senseless. We’ve tried broken cistern after broken cistern, but they hold no water (see Jer. 2). Our only hope is that the living water would come to us. And it did. He did!
  • Our salvation and satisfaction comes to us only by the cross. From the cross he said “I thirst” and he died. By so doing, he made a way that we would drink and live.
  • The concentric circles are like the ripples or rings that occur when a drop of water hits a watery surface. There is reverberation; it grows; the effects spread. That reminds us that the message of Christ’s saving satisfaction which flows from the cross has to spread in this world. And his plan is that it would spread through us.

Spreading Christ’s Glory through The Christmas Store

2010 | by Trent Hunter | Category: Mission

Each year DSC puts together several gift stores and provides parents the opportunity to select gifts for their children (in some cases, children select gifts for their parents) who would normally be unable to celebrate Christmas with gifts. By partnering with local churches in areas of greater need, DSC is able to extend and support the work of the gospel in the broader Albuquerque area.

There are several ways to share the love of Christ through The Christmas Store:

  1. Because we have over 3,500 tags, please take several of them and spend between $1.00 – $10.00 for each item specified on the tag, rather than one item worth over $20.00. Bring the items back unwrapped with the tags attached by December 5 and deposit them in the appropriate box in the foyer.
  2. Sign up in the foyer to help in one of the Christmas Stores. There is still room on three different trips: Saturday, December 11, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Navajo Reservation (Steamboat); Monday, December 13, 3:00 – 8:00 PM, Juntos; Friday, December 17, 3:00 – 8:00 PM, East Central Ministries. Invite a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor to join you in service to the community as an opportunity to share the gospel with them.
  3. Make a donation to purchase gifts by indicating “The Christmas Store” on your check and envelope. For more information, visit the kiosk in the foyer or contact Carolyn Rush at carolyn@desertspringschurch.org.
